Abstract

Adolescent mental health is a growing concern worldwide, with many young individuals struggling with issues such as anxiety, depression, and stress. The psychological factors that influence adolescent well-being, including locus of control and emotional intelligence, play a significant role in shaping mental health outcomes. This paper explores the impact of these two psychological constructs on adolescent mental health, focusing on their definitions, theoreticalunderpinnings, and empirical research. Locus of control refers to the extent to which individuals believe they have control over their lives, either internally (personal control) or externally (outside influences). Emotional intelligence, encompassing self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills, plays a crucial role in how adolescents manage their emotions, form relationships, and navigate stress. The interaction between these two factors is examined, emphasizing how an internal locus of control combined with high emotional intelligence contributes to greater resilience and mental well-being. Conversely, a high external locus of control and low emotional intelligence may lead to negative mental health outcomes. The paper also discusses interventions aimed at enhancing both locus of control and emotional intelligence in adolescents to improve their mental health. By understanding these psychological determinants, the paper underscores the importance of fostering positive mental health practices during adolescence to promote long-term well-being.
